We waited far too long to visit Switzerland! And our stay was far too short! We took the classic Swiss Rail Tour for our first sojourn to this magnificent country. Hopefully, it won’t be our last.
From the moment we landed in Switzerland, we were captivated; our first hotel, in Lucerne, was a converted prison! In Interlaken, we visited the Jungraujoch via Grindelwald and Kleine Scheidegg, returning via Murren and Lauterbrunnen. The GoldenPass train to Montreux was highlight but the town itself, a little disappointing. Zermatt was outstanding and the Matterhorn simply breathtaking - both literally and metaphorically. Just getting to St. Moritz is an all-day delight… on the Glacier Express. “Express” may be a misnomer as it takes 8 hours from Zermatt but most of us wanted it go on forever.
From St. Moritz, we took the Bernina Express to Tirano which is actually in Italy and then by bus to Lugano via the shores of Lake Como. A brief overnight in Lugano and we are on the Gotthard Panorama Express to Luzern via train to Flüelen, a boat on Lake Luzern and back on a train to Zurich. The whole trip has been a dream, synchronized as only the Swiss can do through its MOBAtime clocks!
